Definition of cartilaginous joints :

It is one of the type of synarthroses.

Types of Cartilaginous joints :

1. Primary cartilaginous joint ( Synchondrosis )

  • Synarthrosis
  • Connecting material is hyaline cartilage
  • Replaced completely after the period of growth
  • No movement is possible
  • Temporary : epiphyseal plate presents between epiphysis and diaphysis of growing long bone.
  • Permanent : manubrium and first rib

 

 

2. Secondary cartilaginous joints ( Symphysis )

  • Amphiarthrosis
  • Articular surfaces are covered by sheets of hyaline cartilage
  • Disc of fibrocartilage , presents between the hyaline cartilage
  • Little movement is possible
  • This type is present in the median plane of body
  • Intervertebral disks
  • Pubic symphysis
