Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)-c/f, Laboratory Findings,Rx

Clinical Features:

  •  Bleeding: Bleeding from venepuncture sites or recent wounds.
  • Generalized bleeding:

–        GI tract, oropharynx, lungs, urogenital tract

–        Vaginal bleeding in obstetric cases

  • Uncontrolled bleeding

Laboratory Findings:

  • Anaemia
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Fragments on blood film
  • Fibrinogen: ↓↓
  • D-Dimer/FDPs ­­: ↑↑

Treatment of DIC:

  1. Treat the cause of the DIC
  2. Supportive therapy

–        FFP

–        Platelets

–        Cryoprecipitate

–        Blood

  1. To be used with caution and under the direction of the consultant haematologist

–        Novoseven

–        Octaplex
